It is hard to classify Chennai Express as a film, it is more like a non stop spoof fest. Most of the movie is spent in spoofing or referencing earlier films such as Dil Se, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Bhool Bhuliaya, Main Hoo Na, My Name is Khan, and 3 Idiots, or insulting Tamil movie stereotypes. While this is expected out of a Rohit Shetty movie, the fact that SRK was party to going the Salman way is kind of sad.
Shahrukh has excelled in his career to tow the middle path. He has not gone crass like Salman or taken the heavy handed method actor route of Aamir. His audience has always identified with him as the common man who could succeed. Even though he keeps shouting that he is playing the common man in Chennai Express, and starts off by doing so, it all comes crashing down post interval in a familiar Bollywood plot where the common man beats the living daylight out of half the population of Chennai.
Speaking of which there is precious little of Chennai or express in the movie, which does not matter much. But what does matter is the shocking lack of humor, especially in the second half. When i say Deepika Padukone was the best thing in the movie even though there is zero chemistry with SRK, that is making quite a statement, isn’t it? The jokes are forced, the product placements are overlong, the music is sub par, the choreography even worse, the action typical of a Shetty movie is over the top gravity defying, and the absurd colors take away whatever way the cinematographer was trying to pass off as Tamil Nadu. Rohit Shetty should stick to complete mindless fare with B grade stars, not rope in a Khan and raise expectations.

Chennai Express is one of the worst hyped movies of 2013. Paid reviews will maintain „good“word of mouth- I kept wanting to like it but could not. Even though this will cross the 100 crore club, i hope SRK realizes too that he and lame comedies are not a good combo. Recommended only for die hard SRK fans- 5/10
