Far Cry’s success led to several independent sequels developed by Ubisoft, as well as remakes: Far Cry Instincts and Far Cry Instincts: Predator. A loose film adaptation was released in 2008.
Gameplay
The suffocating rain forest provides cover and oppression, which can benefit the player and enemies. Enemies dynamically react to the player’s focus and actions. Story
Jack Carver has left his mysterious and bitter past behind and left society to run a boat rental business in the South Pacific. He is hired by a woman named Valerie Constantine to secretly take her to an unknown island in Micronesia. After Val leaves on a jet ski alone, Jack’s ship is blown up by a missile. With the help of a man named Doyle, Jack travels through several islands and battles mysterious mercenaries in search of Val. Through encounters with Trigens (genetically altered beasts) and information from Doyle, Jack soon discovers that the island is part of a genetic engineering experiment funded by the Krieger Corp. genetic company. and led by its CEO, Dr. Krieger.
As the game progresses, it becomes clear that some of the triggers, which are running away, are becoming too big of a problem for mercenaries to deal with, and that experiments are not limited to mutant primate mutations only, but passed on to mutating humans (possibly mercenaries) . When Jack finally reaches Val, she is taken to another area by a helicopter stopped by Jack. After swimming to the coast, Val reveals that she is a CIA undercover agent and investigates Krieger’s operations.
After further exploration, Jack must search and rescue Val again, while the human Trigens have escaped (liberated by Jack) and started a rebellion against the mercenaries on the island. After rescuing Val, they broke up and reunited when Jack murdered the mercenary, Crowe. The information Crowe brought with him indicates that Krieger has a tactical nuclear weapon on the island, which he intends to use as a last resort to cover his tracks in case his projects are under investigation.
After the Department of Defense analyzes the situation, Jack and Val steal the nuclear weapon, despite Jack’s protests. Before entering the factory, Doyle warns that the mutagen can infect them when the explosion goes off, and recommends taking a mutagen-resistant serum before assembling the nuclear weapon. At the factory, they do that and assemble the nuclear bomb, which detonates directly behind Jack and Val when they leave the factory, leaving them unconscious.
While Jack and Val are unconscious, Krieger captures them before they leave for their main base in a helicopter. Launched from the helicopter, Jack must battle through the contaminated area of Trigen to save Val and escape the islands with his life. Upon reaching a supply of mercenaries, Jack notices his arm turning green. Doyle replies that the airborne mutagen concentration may be too strong for the antidote, but Krieger is working on a cure in a nearby lab. So Jack goes looking for Krieger, who injected himself with the mutagen but was eventually defeated.
With his last breath, Krieger reveals that there is no cure for the mutagen. Doyle reveals that the “ antidote ” they took earlier was the same mutagen they tried to protect themselves from, and reveals that he plans to sell the mutagen on the black market before fleeing. Jack battles a horde of Trigens and overtakes and kills Doyle.
Jack then escapes just before the volcano, which contains Krieger’s headquarters, explodes. He and Val both heal from the mutagen and manage to navigate a boat.
